North of the River

North of the River refers to the area of Tuscaloosa north of the Black Warrior River and east of Watermelon Road.  This area of Tuscaloosa is mainly family-oriented and there are several shopping centers, local businesses and a variety of dining options.

 

Attractions:

Lake Tuscaloosa is the main attraction located north of the river. It is a 5,885-acre water supply reservoir that was constructed to supply domestic and industrial water for the City of Tuscaloosa. However, the lake has become very popular for various types of recreation including boating, swimming and fishing. There are public and private boat ramps located on the lake, as well as several private marinas. Public launches are located at Binion Creek, Rock Quarry and Sharps Landing. North River Yacht Club is a private golf club in Tuscaloosa that also offers several other amenities including 8 tennis courts, an Olympic sized yacht club pool, a heated indoor/outdoor golf club pool, a grassy beach and scenic lake view at the Captain’s Cabin located directly on Lake Tuscaloosa, a marina, fitness center, spa, the Golf Club View Dining Room, a sports lobby, and The Warner Lodge, an upscale hotel with space for conference rooms. Indian Hills Country Club is a second private country club located north of the river. It also features several amenities including an 18-hole golf course, a fitness center and spa, tennis courts, a swimming pool, several dining rooms, and a sports grill. Ol’ Colony Golf Complex is a public golf course in the area. Designed by former PGA star, Jerry Pate, this 18-hole facility features rolling fairways and beautiful, contoured greens. Parks in the area include Watermelon Road County Park, Sokol Park, Rock Quarry County Park and Carrolls Creek Island County Park. Lake Nichol and Lake Harris are two other smaller lakes located north of the river.

 

Shopping:

There are a couple of shopping centers located north of the river that all feature several shops, businesses and restaurants. The Galleria of Tuscaloosa is located right off of McFarland Blvd. Part-Two is a popular women’s clothing store that puts a contemporary spin on classic women’s clothing. The linen closet, an upscale linen boutique is also located here.  Mobley & Sons and Canterbury Clothers are also popular shops in The Galleria of Tuscaloosa. Merchant’s Walk is another shopping center in Tuscaloosa located right down the street from The Galleria of Tuscaloosa, and includes Talbot’s, Oz Records, Wilbirds Unlimited and Zoe’s Kitchen. Ridge Village Shopping Center, a third shopping center located north of the river, includes Nancy Taylor Day Spa, New Creations Salon, and others. Solo Boutique is another local favorite women’s contemporary clothing store also located right off of McFarland Blvd N!

 

Dining:

Located in The Galleria of Tuscaloosa, Evangeline’s offers the finest dining experience. With an artistic and luxurious interior, the ambiance is warm, welcoming and sure to delight all your senses, and their food is always delicious! Fig, located in the Ridge Village Shopping Center, is a popular casual dining restaurant that offers garden fresh salads, sandwiches on gourmet breads, fabulous soups and chowders served fresh daily and much more!  Desperado’s Steakhouse brings a Pacific Northwest atmosphere and a taste of the southwest to Tuscaloosa with their upscale casual restaurant. Cypress Inn, located directly on the Black Warrior River, is famous for their beautiful riverfront views paired with quality southern cuisine and friendly service. Popular Mexican restaurants in the area include Pepito’s, Jalapeno’s and Lope’z. The Tin Top Restaurant and Oyster Bar is also delicious!
