Pet Ownership Can Be Expensive And/Or Very Troublesome For Apartment Renters

Even if you do find an apartment that has a pet-friendly policy, expect to pay substantially for the privilege, either a large up-front deposit when you move in or a monthly add-on fee for your rent.  And if you try to sneak your beloved pet in expecting to not get caught, forget it.  You will only be asking for legal proceedings against you.

Complexes that allow pets for a fee have to cover the costs of any damage your pet may do as well as cover maintenance of pet parks and other features available for your pet.  Expect to pay either a large up front deposit or monthly fee, or both.  And if your pet accidentally damages your carpet, don't be surprised if the replacement cost to you runs far more than your deposit.  You are paying for a privilege that the property owner had just as soon not allow.

Another disadvantage to pet ownership is finding a roommate who is as fond of your pet as you are.  Two people sharing the same living area can be awkward, but adding a pet to the mix can quickly become an unhappy situation for everyone.  Not everyone likes pets in their living area, plus many people have allergies that can make the situation impossible.

So, before you get too attached to your animal friend, even if you have a patio or small outside play area for the animal, consider that it may literally be more costly to keep than it is worth in companionship.
