On-Campus and Off-Campus Housing in Tuscaloosa
At The University of Alabama ~27% of students live in college-owned, operated, or college-affiliated housing while ~73% of students live off-campus. All freshmen students at The University of Alabama are technically required to live on-campus. One main exemption from this is if the student chooses to live at home with their parents in Tuscaloosa. There are also other categories that are taken into consideration including marriage status, non-traditional freshmen student status, children, etc. Incoming freshmen are required to complete an online housing application and those that complete the application early are able to input housing and roommate preferences. Students who submit their housing applications later are typically not provided with preferential housing options and they also do not have the option to request a certain roommate. Therefore, it is best to submit the housing application as soon as it becomes available!
The University of Alabama features several on-campus residence halls and each freshmen student is assigned to one based upon gender, freshman status and certain campus involvement. Co-Ed Residence Halls include Blount (Blount Undergraduate Initiative), Burke, Friedman (Commerce and Business Administration), Harris (Capstone CIS, HES, Nursing), Lakeside, Palmer (The Mallet Assembly), Presidential Village, Riverside and Ridgecrest East/West & South (Honors). Co-Ed apartment communities include Bryce Lawn and The Highlands. Male residence halls include Bryant (Athletics & Engineering) and Paty. Female residence halls include Tutwiler, Somerville and Parham.
University of Alabama students of at least sophomore status have the choice to move off campus. There are tons of apartment communities, condos, houses, townhouses, duplexes and cottages to choose from, and most are all within walking distance to campus. Housing options range in price and lease length, allowing you flexibility in choosing the best option to suit your needs! The University also has a Crimson Choice Program that helps parents and students in choosing the best off-campus housing option. The list of Crimson Choice properties is updated annually and includes those properties that have met certain criteria and security standards. The University also provides yearly off-campus housing fairs that provide parents and students with the opportunity of getting to meet with several properties in the same building and all in one afternoon!
Off-campus student housing can be identified and inspected through any of a large number of on-line sites based on student apartment living priorities: privacy, lifestyle, convenience, amenities, etc. Students and Faculty that live off-campus can join the Off Campus Association. The Off Campus Association sets up utilities for members, saves members money by covering their utility deposits, and they also contact the utility companies to set up service visits for you.
